Beyond the Music- Creating Worship Right Where You Are

Dec 26, 2022

This post is by Shaina Weisgerber.

I have been a part of every kind of church music you could think of: children’s choir, hand bells, I sang specials, and have been a part of many worship teams over the years.  I prided myself on my ability to sing for the Lord. It became part of my identity, it was my full time career for a time, it was a ministry, a hobby and my main source of friendship and community. Stepping out of that last year I have had to unlearn and relearn a lot of aspects of church, community, worship and serving.

Worship can be a tricky thing to navigate. Many of us love worship music. We love to sing our worship and experience the music as we sing praises to God. I love that and still value music as a form of worship. I will always respond to music in worship.

What if we didn’t have the ability to use music? How would we worship the Lord then? Is there anything in your life that resembles worship outside of singing a few songs on Sunday morning or listening to Christian radio in the car?

I’ve been unlearning so much recently about what I thought worship was. I’m also learning ways to worship the Lord that aren’t musically driven. Let me encourage you to examine your current life and see where you are leaning into worship during the everyday schedule of life.

That school pick up line? Prayer time.

Standing at the sink doing dishes after dinner? A time to list all the things you are grateful for one by one to the Father.

All of the little kid laundry, endless loads of socks, undies and jammies? Your opportunity to thank God for those littles, pray for them, their lives, futures, schools, friends, and activities.

Tripping on your spouse’s shoes for the millionth time? Shout praises for the partner God has given you to do life with, even when there are things that drive you crazy.

Time spent in the garden, doing crafts, cleaning your home, reading with your child, taking a walk, volunteering at a shelter or food bank, hosting a Bible study or spending time at your child’s school by making copies or helping at lunch. All of these things have aspects of worship threaded through them.

If the only time you think about or consider your worship life is in a pew on Sunday morning, then may I suggest you start looking at the mundane parts of your life in a new light? Worshiping through music is a gift and a blessing to us all, just don’t forget that our lives are a response to the goodness of God and there are a thousand little ways, each day to make a joyful noise to the Lord.
