It’s a new year and as much as I would love to tell you that there is a new you on the horizon…. you are the one and only you, and there’s nothing new about that.
The reality is, we don’t magically turn into somebody different at the stroke of midnight Dec 31st. We become somebody different with consistent intentional moment by moment choices. One at a time. We grow in our capacity. We discover new levels of our passions. We push our physical limits. We develop, “God-centered, small, simple habits,” that can transform our lives.
This transformation process we all go through is by design and to some degree unavoidable. We are always moving and we get to choose if that direction is forward or backwards. We can choose how we journey through it.
In the Hello Mornings book Kat talks about being “One in a Schmoozle.” If you have the book, turn to page 23. If you don’t, keep reading. Kat writes about the odds of two people having the same top five strengths [Clifton’s Strengths finder] being 1 in 275,000. Going even further she reminds us that the odds of someone having the same top five, in the same order, is 1 in 33.4 million! If you can believe it (or read it), there is an even more magnificent statistical number she talks about than you being 1 in 33 million. It is a Schmoozle, and it has thirty-eight zeros.
The point is that there is no one else on this earth that was created to think, feel, and impact like you… and that is on purpose.
In our media driven culture, we get caught up in scrolling through all the things that others are doing. We compare ourselves, judge them, use valuable time, and maybe (maybe-not) feel none the wiser for it. We measure our outcomes based on being within the 33 million instead of the 1.
As we begin this new year can we commit to focusing on becoming the 1? Let’s learn more about ourselves and in doing so create opportunities for new experiences. This new commitment will break down barriers we thought previously unbreakable. We will unlock a capacity level we didn’t know existed within ourselves. We will also suffer along the way.
No one can guarantee a stroke of midnight transformation. But we can guarantee struggle, stretching, and probably tears… lots of them. It’s okay though, tears can be a good thing. They are a common companion to growth from the moment we enter this world. Just because you are an adult now doesn’t mean you don’t get to share your growing pains. We need to share, just make sure it is with the right people.
Along with the new commitment to becoming the 1, can we also choose to do so together? We can’t become who we are meant to be without sharing the journey with others. If you need someone to share with, check out the Hello Mornings Community, or The Academy, or reach out to a friend who will wipe your tears while she whispers the truth to your weary heart.
It is a gift to enter into a new year, and an even greater gift to choose the journey of becoming one in a schmoozle. Here’s to the process and the pain. Here’s to being transformed one small simple habit at a time. Here’s to the New Year and a new understanding of you.
