The days are full and busy. No matter how much I try to plan to slow down, even when my word for 2024 was “slowly,” it just seems like our family is often operating at a speed that is not healthy. So, when I think of the coming year and how I may be doing a personal inventory in January, I wonder what that is going to look like.
I am learning that setting goals, achieving habits and following through takes more than a one time one day commitment to do it. I must take time to ponder and consider. There will need to be follow-through and follow-up. I am going to have to face myself and be honest with God about where I have been, where I am and where I think I am going. I also must be completely willing to see what God wants me to see and go where He directs, even if it is not where I want to go or where I planned to go.
It takes effort and focus to consider my personal inventory and seek out what might help me see more clearly the season I am in. The biggest question I am met with is, where am I going to find the time to consider these questions? That question alone will start and end the whole thing right there for some of us. It will take effort, focus and a little bit of time. What if I do not think I have room to fit it in? It is easier to put it off or just determine it isn’t right for me.
If you do not think you have time to fit it in, I encourage you to start there. That is a wonderful place to take some personal inventory, locating time. Just start by focusing your attention on asking God where there may be pockets of time you can utilize. Simply asking Him to help us find the time requires little effort, and He will show up to help us. It is amazing what can happen when we ask Him for wisdom and wait for Him to give it.
Once we locate a little time each day, we can just start asking some basic and easy questions to begin our personal inventory. These are a few of my favorites I am looking forward to considering:
What are my “fillers” (activities, people, work, places that fill you up?)
What are my “drainers” (activities, people, work, places that drain you?)
What are your current priorities?
What are your current hydration habits?
--These questions are from a list of thirty-one suggested Simple Personal Inventory Prompts inside the Hello Mornings Academy.
I will be enjoying how God shows me things through my willingness to find a little time to consider these questions. Often, the things I discover are not even what I would have assumed I would find out about myself. I am looking forward to gaining perspective and understanding about the resources I have available to me in my very unique life to set goals and build habits.
I hope you find some time to explore your personal inventory and understand how you can best set goals and build healthy habits this new year! Be encouraged, even if all you can do is seek God on where you might find a little time. He will refresh and renew you! We are all a work in progress.
May The Lord bless you and keep you!
