When you think of memorizing Scripture, what comes to mind?
Up until recently, I have had a fairly one-way view on it. It is for me—for me to grow deeper in my relationship with the Lord, that I might be able to ward off the fiery darts and traverse safely the valleys that seem so low, so long. Knowing His Word well means I can recall what to do when certain trials, decisions or blessings come to my life. I’ll remember praises and wise instruction. I didn’t really consider myself selfish by having this perspective, I just think we are always growing in the Lord this side of Heaven and I’m willing to be teachable.
I had this one-way view until recently, when I found myself ready to write a second blog post about Scripture memory and looking for an angle to write on the topic. Again.
What would be different? Different from my last post. I didn’t want to write the same thing. How would I manage to find a new idea?
Then, in that special way He does, the Spirit spoke life into my heart and mind. A fresh perspective.
Memorizing Scripture is not just for me. It is for my family, my friends and so many others I will cross paths with who will need His Word to sustain them, encourage, uplift and give direction.
This idea first came to me as I thought over the actions of a friend. Lately, she has often answered my concerns or questions directly from the Word. Without hesitation, without her own words, she just straight answers me from the Word of God. It caused me to really think about her replies being Scripture and not her own words. Then as I prepared to write this post, I realized we aren’t meant to memorize God’s Word just for ourselves, but also for others.
When I choose to memorize parts of His Word I am choosing to hide it away in my heart so I might not sin against Him and also, so I might have the most powerful tool to offer to those in their time of need. I can choose to memorize His Word so I can recall it at times when someone needs a good bit of encouraging and my human wisdom will never suffice.
It is not just for me. The hard work is also for others. For we are all the reason He came and the reason the Spirit worked in humans to write down the words of Scripture. It is here for us and it is for all of us to share with one another.
I don’t really know why it took me until my 45th year to see this point of view, but I am thankful for it now. I’m encouraging everyone who lays eyes on these words to consider how powerful and loving it is to memorize Scripture. For each one of us will need it, and we also will have it stored up to share with others. Let’s put in a little extra time and effort to know Him better by memorizing bits of His Word.
Stay salty, memorize Scripture and be willing to share it with others, be a light! Matthew 5:13-16
Comfort with the comfort we were comforted with! 2 Corinthians 1:4
Encourage, edify and lift others up! Romans 14:19
In a multitude of words, sin is not absent, so let’s not just offer others our own wisdom, using our own words – let’s get to know His words well and share them! Proverbs 10:19
Answering with truly wise words from His Word rather than being wise in our own eyes and offering advice from ourselves! Proverbs 26:12
Hide His Word in our hearts, and don’t sin against Him! Psalm 119:11
Stay in His Word. Stay Salty. It’s not just for us, it is just as much for others!
May The Lord bless you and keep you!
