Do you want to be prepared for what the world pushes against you, have the ability to defend your King well, and change the world for the better? My answer is yes, and if you are a child of God, most likely your answer is YES too! In order to do these things, we must know the significance of God’s Holy Armor and understand its vital importance to the survival of the soul (mind, will, and emotions), body, and spirit. That being said, today our focus is on the most important piece of armor there is--- the belt of truth!
As I prayed and prepared to write this blog post, I felt led to write about the intricacies of the belt (girdle) of truth, what they mean for us, and how they pertain to Bible Study. I believe the more we understand this working piece of God’s Holy Armor, the better we can understand the significance of truth and (the studying of) His Word.
Ephesians 6:14 says, “Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth…” Have you ever asked yourself why God tells us to put on the belt first, or what the significance of putting it on before the other pieces is?
I believe the answer is we must have God’s truth in our hearts first, so we can prepare for battles effectively, fitting all of the other armor on properly, in order to--- powerfully defeat the lies of the enemy successfully. God wants us to be wrapped in His truth before donning any other weapon!
Do you see the connection? The study of God’s Word, leads to a better understanding of His truth and helps us to be foundationally armed, so we can defeat the enemies of God (who are also our enemies).
God is the Author of truth, the opposite of Satan who is the author of lies, and if we do not have truth, we are ill-equipped to fight any battle. Only God’s truth can set our hearts and minds free. The truth of who Jesus is and who we are in Him lets us walk in our true identity and calling--- and the truth of His Instructions (the Bible) helps us to continually walk in that truth.
To put this into a logical perspective, let’s look at the armor of a Roman soldier. It had many components, but the piece holding it all together was the girdle (belt). The first thing the Roman soldiers did was wrap their girdle around their tunic (at the waist). Otherwise it would become loose, and their full armor could not be properly fitted. And who needs a tunic moving around so much that nothing fits or feels right in the heat of battle?
I like to look at it like this: though we are required to be in the world, we do not have to be of the world. We wear the tunic (earthly physical body) because we must (it is a requirement), but the belt of truth keeps the world out of the way, helping us see everything through the eyes of Jesus while we are here on assignment. God’s truth ties everything together and purifies the earthly tunic that we must wear! It is imperative that we use the girdle, just like the soldiers did, so we will not fall prey to the schemes of evil (dealings of the flesh), nor the lies of the enemy. We must apply this truth to our lives, and understand this very important spiritual resource not only protects, but also defends and equips us--- to walk fully in the will of the Father.
How can we know God’s truth? We know, because He shows us when we are in relationship with Him, and because we STUDY His Word. In essence, we must understand that if His Word isn’t hidden in our hearts--- it will NOT transform our lives, nor prepare us for battle. The Bible is our Battle Plan, but it can only be used effectively if we study the plan itself, and understand the truth therein.
