Walking is one of the most beneficial exercises you can do. We know that walking is a full body workout that helps our joints, muscles, weight-loss/management, respiratory health, heart health and even mental health. Walking is an amazing way to stay healthy and keep healthy rhythms.
Enoch is not one of the first people I think of when I think of people in the Bible. We tend to focus on Moses, Abraham, Paul, Mary, Peter, and of course Christ. Enoch is mentioned in Genesis as well as Hebrews. There is not a lot about him, but enough that we can glean some deep wisdom.
“When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.” Genesis 5:21-24
This stood out to me, “Enoch walked faithfully with God”. We don’t know how God “took him away” or why, but we do know that He walked faithfully with him. During that time, the culture was very prone to idol worship and worshiping many gods. It is important to know that this would translate to “Enoch faithfully walked with The God”. During a time where it was common practice to worship many gods, Enoch walked faithfully with The One.
Sometimes we get overwhelmed with all that we should be doing for God or what we haven’t accomplished for God. So we quit. I sometimes get overwhelmed and frustrated when I start a new exercise regimen. I’m committed for a while and then I quit. There is something about walking that is steady, consistent and reliable. Walking with God is much less about rigor and much more about a steady pace. It is relational. Walking with the Father is just as much for our health as walking with a friend. When we steadily walk with God, we maintain our health as we commune with him, we work out our muscles of faith, and we know we are not alone.
“By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God.” Hebrews 11:5
I encourage you to think about walking when you are evaluating your health and movement portion of your morning routine. Walking for your health is good any way you look at it. There will be days when you want to walk and days you won’t. There are times when you take a quick one mile walk and other times you will linger and enjoy a longer distance walk. Sometimes you walk with a friend and other times you walk alone. You might listen to a podcast or music and some days you will enjoy the sounds of the neighborhood. As you walk for your body’s health I hope you will begin to see how your walk with Christ is the most important walking you will do. Daily walking with the Lord will change your health, your mindset and your relationships. You will find yourself healthier than ever when your main exercise is walking in faith.
